About Us
Our mission is to promote artistic excellence. Artists, writers, curators, gallery owners and art buyers rely on us to present art of the highest standards. We encourage visitors to go to the artists’ websites and buy art directly from them. We vigorously and continually promote the artists to our widespread international audience, across several social media platforms, and three websites, so the artists can gain new followers and buyers and receive career opportunities. Learn more about us.
All women artists were invited to submit JPEGs of their artwork for consideration. We welcomed all subjects, styles, sizes, and all 2-and 3-d art mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, collage, photography, printmaking, digital art, and more. (No installation or video.)
Purpose and Mission for “HerStory”
For centuries women artists have inspired and enlightened us with their enormous talent, vision and commitment. Many have served as creative trailblazers in their chosen styles and mediums. Their contributions have gone under-recognized and they haven’t received the accolades they deserve.
Promoting women artists has always been a priority of mine. Starting in the 1980’s I curated women’s art exhibitions in major NYC, NY galleries, corporate spaces, and other public venues. I also promoted women artists in Manhattan Arts International magazine. Since I established the Manhattan Arts International website in 2000 we have been presenting “HerStory” online exhibitions. We will continue to present annual “HerStory” exhibitions until there is a fair and equal balance of women artists represented by art museums, galleries, art book publishers, major private and public collections, auction houses, and the media.
The purpose of this exhibition is to promote artists. We do not engage in art sales, nor do we charge any commissions on sales made as a result of this exhibition.
Widespread International Publicity
The “HerStory” online exhibition will be promoted to our widespread international social media network and our three subscription-based email marketing newsletters. It will also be promoted on our website The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS and also Renee Phillips The Artrepreneur Coach. Through our exhibitions many artists make connections to galleries, art consultants, arts writers and art buyers. (Read some comments below.)
Artist Showcase Membership Award
One artist will be selected to be invited to become an Artist Showcase Member in the Manhattan Arts International Online Gallery for a full year. This will include social media promotion and invitations to all Members Only online art exhibitions and articles for one year.
All Entrants Will Be “Winners”
This year, we want to reward all entrants in some manner. Artists who are not selected for the exhibition will either be included in a post in social media with a link to their website or will be included in an article on this website or on our website The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS or my website Renee Phillips The Artrepreneur Coach. Please note: In order to be eligible for this promotion, artists must submit their entries according to the “Entry Requirements”.

Renée Phillips: Curator. She is Founder and Director of Manhattan Arts International. She has organized “HerStory” exhibitions on this website since 2000 after curating many women art exhibitions in NYC galleries, corporate spaces and nonprofit venues. She has served as a juror, member of the board of directors, advisor, and keynote speaker for several women arts organizations. She is the author of “A Resource Guide for Women Artists” ebook. She serves as a mentor and career coach for artists and writes articles “to help artists achieve their fullest potential” on Renee-Phillips.com. She is also the founder of The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS which promotes how art serves as a catalyst for bringing positive change and wellness to individuals, society and the environment.
Curator’s Criteria: “The art selected for ‘HerStory’ will reflect extraordinary originality, innovation, and technical skill. I seek art that has a significant impact on the viewer, and provokes our interest, inspires contemplation and insight, and transforms us. The artist’s vision and statements will also be considered during the curatorial process. Finalists will be selected after I visit entrants’ websites where I can view their overall body of work and learn more about them and their inspiration. Although I may consult with some of my art professional associates about the entries, I will make the final selections to include at least 50 women artists for this exhibition. (Read a Curator’s Statement from Renee Phillips.)
As the curator, I am dedicating “HerStory 2021-2022” in memory of Selene and Vikki whose loving kindness and spirit of generosity blessed my family and lit up the world.
Special Recognition Publicity Awards
Several Artists from the exhibition will be selected for articles and interviews on such topics as: Women Artists as Innovators in their Styles and Mediums, Women Artists as Leaders and Mentors, Women Artists as Advocates for Equality. (For an example of a winner of a Special Achievement Award visit this page.) Artists will be considered for articles The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS website and on Renee Phillips The Artrepreneur Coach website.
At least 10 exhibiting artists will be featured in a video in the Manhattan Arts International Youtube channel.
Praise for Previous “HerStory” Exhibitions Presented by Manhattan Arts International
Leah Poller, Art Alliance Inc., NY NY wrote, “I absolutely love the “HerStory 2020” exhibition. As a Board Member of the New York Society of Women Artists I have been encouraging all our members to make their personal statements – to go on record for who they are and what they are about from their own mouths. Not all of us will be assigned biographers post mortem… so it is important to leave some accurate records. Your effort is great as part of this.”
Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Evans (contemporary art collectors) wrote, “The internet is flooded with massive online galleries that have no quality control. Thank you for creating a place on Manhattan Arts International where art lovers with standards can rely on seeing professional level artwork by artists with credentials.”
Debora Levy expressed, “I am honored to be part of this exhibition alongside so many outstanding artists. I love the power, wisdom, sensibility, and intuition of women.”
James Campbell wrote, “This edition of “Her Story” exemplifies the artists’ role with attention to mastery of craft in both capricious and contemplative subjects. The works in this exhibition demonstrate a deep sensitivity to the artists’ place in our modern world, where words must be spoken and images expressed.”
Denisa Prochazka exclaimed about “HerStory”, “What an incredible array of female talent across all media. Ever since I have encountered your artistic wisdom, experience and positive guidance, I have tried to execute the best quality, authenticity and depth with complete freedom as a female artist. I truly thank you for that, because I can see the progression and strength in my work.”
Pia Pilar Reynaldo won a Special Award in the “HerStory” 2020-2021 exhibition. She wrote, “I sold ‘A Caregiver’s Pain’ to a first time art buyer in Colorado after he saw the TV news segment regarding “HerStory” on NBC 9News Colorado.”
B. Ellis, exhibiting artist wrote, “I am honored to have been chosen. Your validation is invaluable. It fuels my courage to keep showing up, to be authentic, to stay focused, and to do my best to be my best artist.”

I just found your website today and I would like to know if this is for artist in all the states or just local. I wish I had seen this prior to the deadline. I have subscribed to the newsletter and hopefully I won’t miss out on anything else. I do have my own website as well, which I see is a requirement.
Renee Phillips says
Dear Suzanne, Thank you for your comment and question. All of our online exhibitions are always open to artists worldwide. Thank you for becoming a subscriber. Best wishes to you throughout 2022, Renee
Marjorie E Elliott says
I was sad to find out today that the deadline was 1-16-22. I only just received notice 1-17-22. I would have loved to participate, too late now. I never commented before.
Renee Phillips says

Dee Tivenan says
Hi Renee
I’m sorry about your losses this year. It’s special you’re dedicating the show to them.
Renee Phillips says
Thank you Dee. The HerStory show is in memory of my beloved sister and sister-in-law. Although they died several years ago, at young ages, I was inspired to dedicate this exhibition in their honor.
Shelly Taylor says
Hi there, Renee! I am THRILLED to have found your website. I love the fact that you are supporting women working in the arts. I found you on New Year’s Day 2022! Feels like fate since I am working on a collection of woman themed art now 🙂 My question is, the website I designed is now live, but I’ve still have more art to add and descriptions to write… would I qualify for the exhibition now?
Renee Phillips says
Dear Shelly, I’m delighted you found us. Congratulations on creating your collection of woman themed art. Although your website says “under construction” you still have several works of art for me to view in addition to the entries you submit, plus you have an About page. All of that is sufficient. And, the deadline is Jan 16 which is when I officially begin the judging/curatorial process, so you have until then to add more artwork to your website. Here is a link to the Entry Form. Happy Healthy New Year!
Karolyn Farrell says
Thank you for sharing this. Our mutual friend, the marvelous Barbara Rachko highly recommended you . You did an electronic issue covering Artists helping artists that I was included in years ago. I am quite busy with art, boards, commissions etc even though I am certainly a senior citizen. Later. KF Best to you. Christmas Eve 2021
Renee Phillips says
Dear Karolyn, Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Healthy and Prosperous 2022! I very much enjoyed including you in the article “Artists Helping Artists” which can be read on the Professional Artist magazine website: https://professionalartistmag.com/artists-helping-artists/
Gwen Roberts says
Thank you for supporting female artists.
Can the pieces I submit for this competition also be entered for other art prizes?
Warmest Regards xx
Renee Phillips says
Hi Gwen, Thank you for your comment and question. Yes, it’s totally Okay for you to submit the same art entries to this competition as you submit to others. I hope this answers your question. Best regards, Renee
Sharlene Chou says
Q: Is the “Artists with their own art website or art blog ” is a must have ?
I do not have art website or art blog , so i am not qualified to apply for this ?
Please advice, thanks
Renee Phillips says
Yes, Sharlene, one of the requirements for artists in this exhibition is that they have their own art website. The deadline is in January so you have plenty of time to create one. There are so many free website platforms to choose from and are very easy to do. All you need to start is to have a home page, about page and page with your art. Read my article “How to Get Started With Your New Art Website”.
