It is an honor and pleasure to have selected Nanette Fluhr as one of the exhibiting artists in the Manhattan Arts International “HerStory” 2022 exhibition with her painting “A Lotus Grows in the Mud”. I also presented Nanette with an Artist Showcase Membership Award. Upon receiving her entries it was immediately apparent she has superior artistic talent in realistic portraiture in addition to her masterful landscapes and still life. Her extraordinary attention to capturing the essence of her subjects with technical prowess claimed this top award. I was also impressed when I learned about Nanette’s many professional achievements.
In the “HerStory” 2023 exhibition I chose Nanette to receive the “Outstanding Woman Artist Achievement Award” for her artistic prowess, many career accomplishments, and for being a leading advocate for advancing the status of women artists. Read an interview with Nanette.

Her work was selected for inclusion in the Lunar Codex, a time capsule of digitized works of art being sent to the moon and permanently placed there in a collection for future explorers.
She has been included in a video produced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, NY, highlighting her Master Copies. Shown below is one example of such a painting titled “Replica of Regnault’s Salome”. A detail of the painting is also shown as the banner image at the top of this page.

Nanette states, “Representational portraiture is my life’s pursuit. It is the challenge of capturing a faithful likeness of my sitter, which I firmly believe must include the articulation of each subject’s persona, that I find most compelling. I approach each painting as an opportunity to try to discover the truth of an individual’s essence.”
She explains, “I draw my inspiration from the Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Ingres, Bouguereau, and from Sargent and Le Brun. Guided by their principles handed down to me by my mentor John Frederick Murray, I aspire to the high standards that these Masters established. As a side light, I have become a noted copyist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in an effort to study them with the depth and focus they deserve.”

Although Nanette’s portraits are classified as realistic, they provide an impressionistic view of the subject, transcending the realistic image. Her work is both stunning and intimate.
