Purpose and Mission for “HerStory” Exhibition of Art by Women Artists
January 31 – April 30, 2022
Manhattan Arts International presents the curated annual “HerStory” exhibition of art by women artists. For centuries women artists have inspired and enlightened us with their enormous talent, vision and commitment. Many have served as creative trailblazers in their chosen styles and mediums. Their contributions have gone under-recognized and they haven’t received the accolades they deserve. We will continue to present annual “HerStory” exhibitions until there is a fair and equal balance of women artists represented by art museums, galleries, art book publishers, major private and public collections, auction houses, and the media. Prior to 2000 I published Manhattan Arts International magazine (1983-2000) to promote emerging artists and I curated exhibitions of women artists in galleries, corporate lobbies, and a variety of public alternative spaces throughout NYC, NY.” ~ Renee Phillips, curator and founder of Manhattan Arts International

Artist Showcase Membership Award
A Lotus Grows in the Mud, oil on linen, 30″ x 24″
My life’s endeavor is to create beautiful and meaningful art. Representational portraiture is my principal avenue in that pursuit. It is the challenge of capturing a faithful likeness of my sitter, which I firmly believe must include the articulation of each subject’s persona, that I find most compelling. I approach each painting as an opportunity to try to discover the truth of an individual’s essence; to capture the soul of the individual, not just their likeness. nanettefluhr.com
Frances Listou
Carrera Wave, Carrera gold marble, 6″ x 6″ x 4″
Carving stone into an image that people savor touching and gazing upon is my passion and purpose. My heart fills when the blind and children playfully trace the lines of my artwork with their hands. The power of passion and tools allow me to mold the Creator’s creations into my creation. It is exuberant! My work evolves from things I see around me: the form, sometimes colors, and the possibility to replicate or enhance the stone to make it mine. francesfineart.com
Anikó Boda
Always Want Something Else, oil on board, 68” x 60”
Resonating across time with the traditional painting schools of Florence, my update of trompe l’oleil painting reflects my penchant for experimentation. I deploy my ‘inventions’ creating fresco-like ‘weatherbeaten’ surfaces and lively objects. My iconoclastic work is based on psychological and philosophical questions of human existence, but always with a twist. Sometimes we like to take certain truths granted. I like to dissect these traditional values, examine them from multiple point of view and turn them into pictures. anikoboda.com
Debbie Daniels
Peach Floribunda, oil on canvas, 48” x 48”
As a long time Pacific Northwest islander, I create large scale oil paintings of details of the natural beauty around me. Captured movement plays a vital role in my work. In capturing movement, I hope to expose and preserve a moment in time and provide something deeply personal to the viewer. My paintings rarely have a horizon line so that the viewer is immersed in the up close details of our surroundings. debbiedanielsart.com
Edi Matsumoto
Survivor 2020, oil on canvas, 30″ x 40″
I painted a series of female figures called Goddesses and Warriors. After centuries of oppression of the female gender, presently, we are witnessing movements for women to stand up, speak up, and fight for our rights, life, and the future of Mother Earth. My artwork celebrates our accomplishments and encourages us to recognize our divinity and courage to continue making the world a better, safer, and accepting place where there will be no gender, racial, or economic inequality. edimatsumoto.com
Ida Tong
We’re Your Future, oil and acrylic, 20″x28″
Since humans have evolved from apes, they will continue to evolve further as “transhumans” in our near future. I can visualize and imagine that these transhumans will be super “conscious” at one point. Because “all the world’s a stage,” they will each be given a role to play, and then will transform our civilization to an unrecognizable world. idatong.org
Phyllis Thomas Miller
The Price of Freedom, acrylic on canvas, 48″ x 36”
As a Vietnam Navy veteran, I provide therapeutic art for the veteran community. The Price of Freedom is a visual tribute to the courageous men and women of our military. Creating visual images that spark self-reflection and motivate the healing process is my passion. Every day I find joy in art. I wish for you is that through my artwork, you experience the same. meroegallery.com
Gwen Roberts
Hoax19, sanded charcoal and pastel on paper 28” x 23”
I’ve become well acquainted with my ever changing body over the years. As a consequence the female form is central to my work. I’ve placed unrealistic demands on my body and I’ve been critical of its aesthetic. I now treasure it and seek to preserve it. My art reveals a sincere narrative of intimate experiences and emotions through a series of sanded pastel drawings. The paper is sized with charcoal, then burnished with sandpaper. Smaller pieces are used for drawing. gwenroberts.com
Valerie Patterson
Dementia’s Dance watercolor 27″ x 35″
We live in a society in which our emotions are often undervalued. Viewing and discussing difficult images, issues, or situations is sometimes considered burdensome to say the least, I believe that my work provides an opportunity to experience pieces of life vicariously, for contemplation and dialogue. It is a continuing search for a deeper understanding of the human condition, for truth and honesty, kindness and mercy, as well as malevolence. valeriepatterson.com
Nancy Staub Laughlin
Effervescence of the Sparkling Wave, triptych, pastel on paper, mounted photographs, 35″ x 90″
My assemblages: pastel on paper and mounted photographs, are created by layering juxtaposing elements: nature vs. glitter. The viewers are immersed into my glowing, dazzling world of color, light, dimension and beauty. I create these stills by combining the elements: photographs of the landscape in seasons and detailed photographs of glowing or glittering moments. The paralleling objects are added to accentuate these phenomena. These compelling compositions are the culmination of many carefully executed steps that define my unique creative process. nancystaublaughlin.com

Thank you so much Renee for the inclusion in the HerStory 2022 exhibition! I am so honored to be with such an amazingly talented group of incredible female artists. I love that you are helping to give female artists a voice since we have been so underrepresented in the art world. Margaret Meade, the social anthropologist said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world…indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”..and that is why I believe that people like you Renee will be instrumental in moving female art to the forefront and to it’s rightful place in the national and international art community. Thank you for your commitment and dedication.
