Art by Women
The “HerStory”2019 exhibition of women artists, through September 20, 2019 featured 58 women artists. For two decades I have been presenting an annual exhibition devoted to art by women on the Manhattan Arts International website. This call was open to all women artists around the world and all themes, subjects, styles and mediums were welcome. As always, we received many extraordinary entries making the curatorial process extremely challenging.
“HerStory”, through September 20, 2019, featured art by 58 women.
Although I am named as the curator, this was a collaborative project. I am extremely grateful to have had expert art professionals to confer with during the entire selection process. And, I had the good fortune to have had assistance from the prestigious members of the Special Recognition Art Awards panel to help me select the finalists. My heartfelt appreciation goes to Karen Gutfreund, Barbara Markoff, Denisa Prochazka, and Nancy Reyner

About “HerStory”: We will continue to present annual “HerStory” exhibitions until there is a fair and equal balance of women artists represented by art museums, galleries, art book publishers, major private and public collections, auction houses, and the media. ~ Renée Phillips, Director, Manhattan Arts International and author of “A Resource Guide for Women Artists”.

Truly enjoyed the art of women on this site. I am a female artist and it is validating to see other women’s work. Helps one to keep painting against the odds. Thank you for this opportunity.

The work in this exhibit is extraordinary! The range of style and overall excellence reflects thoughtful curation. I am over the moon honored to be included. Your work in this space is invaluable; your passion is obvious. I will make sure to share your website with my “tribe”.
Thank you!

This edition of “Her Story” exemplifies the artists’ role with attention to mastery of craft in both capricious and contemplative subjects. The works in this exhibition demonstrate a deep sensitivity to the artists’ place in our modern world, where words must be spoken and images expressed. The language of the artists varies as much as the choice of medium and subject matter; whether it is confrontational, whimsical, or introspective, there is always a story beneath the surface.

Dear James, Thank you for expressing your positive reaction to “HerStory”. To receive praise from an artist of your caliber is extremely gratifying and you emphasized the qualities I was aiming to achieve as the curator. Thanks again, Renee

Thank you Cathy for submitting your outstanding painting to “HerStory”. It’s an exhibition that is rewarding on many different levels — from sharing incredible art to discovering new talent. And, what a pleasure to assemble a group of amazing women artists within one “venue” and offer you all the opportunity to connect with each other. My hope is for you all to build and grow relationships among each other. All the best, Renee

The artwork in this year’s “HerStory” online exhibition is extraordinary! The exhibition has always presented art that is innovative, evocative and technically excellent, but this year’s artwork has affected me more deeply than ever before. I feel a sense of awe when viewing several of the winners’ works.
I am also especially pleased and honored to have received the Barbara Markoff Special Recognition Art Award for my photograph of the dollmaker in Mexico.
Congratulations to all the winners and special thanks to Renee Phillips and all the special recognition award panelists for their time and effort reviewing artwork submitted for this exhibition.
