Nancy Reyner, nancyreyner.com, is a Manhattan Arts International award-winning artist and instructor who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA from Columbia University. Her art is in numerous private and corporate collections including the City of Santa Fe Civic Center, Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner, VA, University of New Mexico Hospital, Albuquerque, NM, Southwestern College, Santa Fe, NM, among others. She has appeared on HGTV’s “That’s Clever” and worked as a technical consultant for Golden Paints. As an author her most recent book is “Create Perfect Paintings”.
She brings a wealth of talent, knowledge and credentials to our creative programs and sharing artistic projects with her is always immensely rewarding. She has served as a juror for Manhattan Arts International competitions in the past and to my delight she agreed to serve on the Special Awards panel for the “New Beginnings” online exhibition.
Before the jurying process for “New Beginnings” began Nancy was very precise about her criteria. She announced, “I am looking for a compelling image, one that invites me to enter another world, and be visually surprised by what I find there. Technical competence is important, but even more so is the work’s ability to reveal the artist’s personality, point of view, and inventive bravery.”
Nancy chose Sheri Rush, a Chicago-based painter who focuses on photography and collage, to receive her Nancy Reyner award. When asked why she selected the artist she wrote, “The image of Sheri’s entry, ‘Progress of the Opus’, had an immediate appeal for me, encouraging an impromptu visit to her website to better understand her intent and technique, and view more of her paintings. This side trip was not disappointing, offering a clear view of her mature and exquisite body of work.”
Nancy added this statement: “I was impressed with her unusual and original technical process, in large scale no less, reminding me somewhat of Gerhard Richter’s early abstracts and overpainted photographs. Yet Rush has genuinely invented her own process utilizing childhood experiences, a strong artistic intent and philosophy with results that are quite extraordinary.
When Sheri submitted her entries to the Manhattan Arts International “New Beginnings” competition she supplied this statement: “My current work explores the contemporary diminishing experience of nature. Layers of landscape are viewed through the phone camera pointed out the windows of cars or trains or planes in which we travel, the vast world becomes a blur, moving from description to the communication of pure visual experience. Spaces exist where windows become portals, an experience of new realities.”
Sheri received a BFA in painting from Texas Christian University and a MFA in painting from the University of Chicago. Her exhibitions include those in Texas and throughout the Chicago area including the Hyde Park Art Center. Her artwork is in many private and corporate collections including Chicago Technology Research Center, Leopold and Associates, and Kulwin and Associates, all in Chicago, IL
As part of her Nancy Reyner Award Sheri Rush received a featured article written by Nancy on her website blog in addition to a private phone consultation with her. She is also being promoted through the Manhattan Arts International global social media networks and was featured in a video on our YouTube channel.
