Drawings That Evoke A Visceral Response
Patti Bradeis is a remarkable self-taught portrait artist from New Jersey who works with graphite, carbon and charcoal in photorealism. She not only achieves an incredible likeness to her subjects, she infuses her drawings with enormous love for humanity and her drawings evoke a powerful visceral effect on viewers. She reveals truths about many positive aspects of the human experience, particularly love, hope and unity that leap into our hearts. The viewer is given the gift to interpret these heartfelt drawings based on their own personal experiences.
It was an honor to select Bradeis as the recipient of the Third Place Cash Award and Featured Artist Award in the Manhattan Arts International “The Healing Power of ART 2017” exhibition for her entry “Hope”, shown above.
Angel’s Touch, graphite, carbon, charcoal, 10″ x 8″.
Bradeis uses photographs as references for her drawings and has attained her technical abilities from studying the works of artists she admires and experimenting with various tools to achieve her desired effect. She explains, “During an unexpected traumatic season in my life, I began to draw. Each drawing refocused my perspective toward the lighter, happier, positive side of each new day. And…I have seen the same effect on people when they view my art work! Their laughter bubbles up from their bellies. Their slow smiles reach their eyes. And their gentle tears display their vulnerable heart.”
About her drawing “Angel’s Touch”, shown above, she states, “This is my son and my granddaughter taking a leisurely stroll with barely a breath between their fingers… It struck me that the gentlest touch of our Lord is sufficient to carry us in this moment and every single one beyond.”
The artist has won many awards including those from the Ellarslie Mansion, Trenton City Museum in its juried event “Ellarslie Open 34” and the “People’s Choice” award in the “It’s Christmas” exhibit at the Centre for the Arts, Bristol Borough, PA. She also received awards from juried competitions held by Art-Competition.net. Her drawings received Best in Show in the Bloom exhibit, Centre for the Arts, Bristol Borough, PA and an exhibition at the Hammonton Art Center, NJ.
