Light-Filled Paintings Inspired by Travels
Sue Miller creates spellbinding realistic and detailed oil paintings of places she encounters around the world. As we meander through her scenes, she arouses our senses and encourages us to discover shapes, colors and reflections of light on natural and man-made objects with a new perspective.
Sue Miller won the Artist Showcase Award in the Manhattan Arts International “New Beginnings” online exhibition which I had the pleasure of curating.
When she submitted her entries to “New Beginnings” she wrote, “Inspired by places I have visited, I aim to capture the effects of light on colors and forms as I have witnessed all over the globe. The pieces selected for the ‘New Beginnings’ exhibition were all inspired by transformation…one day turning into the next, or a historic city in the midst of great change…new beginnings all.”
Miller’s main focus is urban landscapes and she excels at recreating the unique color and characteristics and cultural aspects of the locale she visits. She takes time mixing colors to achieve the ideal hue and tone, and explains, “For me, painting provides a total break from reality, by immersing my energies, thoughts, and complete focus into the time and place of the work’s subject. Painting has helped me to indulge in a deeper mindfulness while visiting new locations around the world. This has allowed me to better absorb and appreciate the full experience of what I have seen, heard, and felt—to more fully perceive and understand each unique and inspiring place.”
Miller’s art is in many collections and she enjoys working on commissioned paintings. In a short period of time she has had more than a dozen solo and group exhibitions. She is also the recipient of Silver Award, OAA Juried Exhibition, Ontario Power Generation Award, PineRidge 16th Annual Juried Art Show, and an Honourable Mention, PineRidge 16th Annual Juried Art Show.
The artist received her art education at the Ontario College of Art and Design with a focus on communication and design. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and also enjoys her membership in the Whitby Station Gallery, PineRidge Arts Council, and the Oshawa Art Association. She is also a member of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise.
