Artist Profile

Michael Massaia uses a large assortment of cameras, tools, filters, and techniques to document the New York City he experiences. To re-introduce people to the mundane with a heightened sensibility, and find the moments that have fallen between the cracks is his ultimate goal.

His work has been exhibited internationally as well as in New York City galleries, and is included in many private and corporate collections. The artist states, "I'm not interested in documenting the way things really are with the camera, I'm just interested in documenting the way things really are to me."

Praise for Michael Massaia

"Michael Massaia manipulates photographic emulsions in the darkroom to give his photographs a marvelous painterly look. It's interesting that some artists give their paintings the look of photographs, so their seems to be an ongoing dialogue between the two media. The figure in a city landscape is one of the all-time most popular motifs for photographers and Massaia has masterfully invigorated the subject with impressionistic charm."
