Artist Profile

Louisa Antico is an award-winning artist, born in Sydney Australia. Her art practice spans painting, etching, drawing, ceramic sculpture and photo media. Working simultaneously across different mediums helps her to find new ways of expressing her thoughts and emotions; she believes this method is “the driving force behind my work.”

Her art refers to the past, present and future. It is connected to that of the earth which is the place of spirits, energy and passion. Her imagery is drawn from nature and dwells in the unconscious world that she envisions in her dreams. She believes that “inside the artwork is the world of the artist. The process of creating art will determine my journey which I hope will be on-going and unwritten.”

The female figure is a central motive throughout her work. The existence of “other worlds” is suggested by her presence. She can appear in a painterly landscape of built-up layers of color and texture or stands iconic in clay. For Louisa, the female form embodies strength and fragility and it is this duality that the artist believes gives the work expression, vitality and meaning.

Working in clay has broadened the way the artist envisages and presents her work. She says that “working in 3D has given me a new perspective where space is the essential element. I approach sculpture in a painterly way and have a very distinct style with a strong emphasis on colour and detail and a definite leaning toward the realm of spirituality.”

Louisa has had numerous one-person and group exhibitions, primarily in Sydney. Among them include those most recently held at the Kerrie Lowe Gallery, NSW Parliament House, in Australia. Her work was selected three times for the Portia Geach Memorial Award, one of the most prestigious portrait prizes in Australia for female artists. She is a recipient of the "Best in Works on Paper” from Manhattan Arts International in the “Healing Power of Art 2007” competition and online exhibition.

The artist has has been featured prominently in publications including the Artist’s Palette. She has a diploma of Fine Art from the National Art School in East Sydney and received Distinction in Ceramic Sculpture from the Nepean College Western Sydney Institute.

Praise for Louisa Antico

"Louisa Antico’s exhuberant paintings catch the eye and inspire the mind. Each brushstroke seems to dance on the canvas, playing its individual part in the lively composition. Through her paintings Louise implores the viewer to travel beyond the painted image, into another world of their own.”
Natash Percy, Artist’s Palette magazine

“Louisa Antico’s work provides the viewer with a conduit to the contemplative and uplifting realm of the soul and spirit. It forms a bridge between the seen and unseen, the physical and metaphysical, taking us on journeys into the enigmatic and complex as well as the sacred and the sublime.”
Renée Phillips, Director, Manhattan Arts International, and member of the International Association of Art Critics
