Artist Profile

John Ferdico was born in the Bronx, New York and attended the Art Students League on scholarship. During his formal training he met another student, Diane Leon. They married in 1979, and continue to paint together in New York City. They travel each year to their apartment in Spain where they paint and exhibit their work.

In his artist's statement John states: "I use vestiges of the past as symbols to embody the continuum of the human spirit in a contemporary vision."
He works in acrylic, oils and collage and his work conveys an innate response to the images and history of archaic and prehistoric cultures. His fascination for the ancient world manifests itself by the juxtaposition of form, color and space. Influences for his work come from Spain, music and film. During his years of study at The Fashion Institute of Technology he also designed jewelry in wax and metal.

John exhibits regularly in New York City and Spain. His work is in permanent collection at the Colegio Farmaceuticos de Alicante (Spain). In 2006 three paintings were chosen by the U.S. Ambassador to Amman, Jordan. Three works of his were selected for the residency of the U.S. Ambassador in Estonia as part of the Art in Embassies Program, State Department of the United States. His work was exhibited in the grand opening of Get Real Art Gallery, New York, NY. It has been featured in the Village Voice, Artspeak, Informacion de Alicante and LaVanguardia (Spain) and The Minetta Review New York University. It was also on view at www.HMHnyc.com.
