Artist Profile

Janet Cristenfeld is both an artist and a spiritual energy healer. After studying painting at Smith College in Massachusetts, her work began to focus on depicting the emotions, sensuality, and spirit of human beings, particularly through the imagery of women. Using oil, watercolor or pencil, she creates emotional and psychological portraits of imaginary people, inspired by her own inner contemplation and the influence of the surrounding world. She explores one's relationship to oneself, to the opposite sex, and to the universe.

Christ and his story is another theme running through her work as an expression of and identification with spirituality. "I see art as an expression of the soul, turning conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings and states of being into a visual manifestation."

Cristenfeld has exhibited in solo and group shows in the New York area and Washington, D.C., most recently at the Parrish Museum in Southampton, NY. In 1994 she was the recipient of the Project Residencies Award from Hillwood Art Museum, sponsored in part by the New York State Council on the Arts. In 1999 she became a Reiki practitioner and eventually, a Reiki Master. After years of making art and doing healing work, she is currently combining them into an art book of channeled spiritual symbols.

Praise for Janet Cristenfeld

"A master of technique, Janet Cristenfeld applies paint flawlessly as though it were skin and blends it meticulously, creating the illusion of inner light. Her figurative drawing is powerful but restrained. The simple curve of an eyelid, sweep of a hand or circular path of an embrace captures the emotion she is trying to convey. Janet also circumscribes her figures with a flat, wide, black line which draws the viewer back to the center of the work -- to the source of the emotion."
