Artist Profile
Evelyn
Floret is a Manhattan artist who has been sculpting since 1995.
Born in France and raised in St. Louis, Missouri she retains dual
United States and French citizenship. She earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to
1995 she worked as an editorial photographer. Her pictures have
been published extensively in People, Sports Illustrated, Time,
and Avenue magazines. Listed on the People Magazine masthead for
two decades, she served as a contributing photographer.
In 1995 when she began to sculpt, the transition from photography
with a focus on people to sculpture with a focus on the figure
was a natural progression. In the process of sculpting, she searches
for the inherent truth and beauty of the human form. Her reference
is ancient Greek sculpture along with more modern French sculptors
like Maillol and Wlerick.
As
a sculptor she models the figure from life in clay and casts her
pieces in bronze in small editions. She has studied with Anthony
Antonios at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in Manhattan
where she has received many awards including the Ralph Weiler
Awards, the Helen Smith Prize for Distinction in Sculpture and
the Edward Mooney Traveling Scholarship Prize. In the summer of
1996 she carved in marble in Pietrasanta, Italy. She holds the
Gold Medal of Honor for Sculpture from the Audubon Artisits 61st
Annual Exhibition 2003.
She has exhibited in many professional juried shows including
The National Sculpture Society Annual Exhibition 2001, The Audubon
Artists 63rd Annual Exhibition 2005, Allied Artists of America
91st Annual Exhibition 2004 and the Pen and Brush 60th Annual
Sculpture and Medallic Exhibition 2006.
From sculpting the figure in clay she has expanded into making
jewelry in the abstract with an emphasis on form and texture.
Her pieces are one of a kind rings and pendants. She uses several
methods and materials. Some of these are collages of fused
glass, others are pieces modeled in precious metal clay that are
transformed into pure silver or gold. She also creates pieces
in wax that are cast in silver or gold. Some rings in her collection
are fabricated in gold.
Her sculpture "Deep" was recently on view at the Salmagundi Club at 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY at the Audubon Artists Annual Exhibition.
