Artist Profile

Abstraction gives Diane a sense of freedom. The art she creates is painterly and influenced by a sense of place. She is a native New Yorker, and as a child lived in an old tenement building which overlooked the Third Avenue El train. The textures of the deteriorated tenement walls became infused in the work later in life. Her primary influence began in 1970 when she bought an apartment in Spain.

She states, “The vast openness of the sky, sea, light has had a profound affect upon me.” Her work style begins in a chaotic manner. “There is no preconceived idea. As I work, color and surface texture create a feeling. From that point the painting takes on a life of its own. The work is completed when I have exhausted a series of revisions that I ‘feel’ the work is finished.”

Diane’s formal art training at the Art Students League, The National Academy of Art and New York University gave her a solid foundation. The artwork she creates is a result of decades of internalizing the Mediterranean culture. Her abstract work represents imagination, personal experience and cultural traditions. The Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Visigoths, Celtiberians, Romans and Moors have made Spain a fascinating place.

Diane is an adjunct associate professor of arts at New York University, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, in the undergraduate liberal arts division. She shares her life with artist, John Ferdico and maintains an apartment in Spain. Diane’s work was featured on Ovation TV as a commercial spot for MY WORK, MY LIFE, MY ART and was featured in the January 2008 Art Calendar article by Kim Hall, “Seize the TV.” Her work is also in the US Embassy in Lima, Peru.

She has work in galleries and private collections in the US and Europe. In addition to her painting and teaching, she writes personal essays and articles for Manhattan Arts International, Art Calendar Magazine and was featured artist in HerCircleezine.com. She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists and Life Member of the Art Students League.
